Hollyhock( Alcea rosea) 'Outhouse' seeds. Pink. Biennial.
Europeans brought this flower home from China in the 15th century and later took it to the American colonies. It is a classic flower on Iowa farmsteads where it has been grown up against outbuildings. Some say that years ago, in the days before indoor plumbing, hollyhocks were grown around outhouses so that refined ladies visiting other farms would not have to ask for directions when nature called. The seeds of Outhouse Hollyhocks can be planted outdoors one week or so before your last frost. The seeds do best when planted 1/8 of an inch deep and will germinate in 10 to 14 days. Thin the plants to 18-36 inches as they grow as they are healthier with space for airflow around them. These flowers will do well in full sun or partial shade and may require staking as they grow.
